Experience Our Contribution for the Community

In 2025, the second edition of the Oceania Geospatial Symposium comes to Suva, Fiji, on 27 and 28 November, organised back-to-back with the Pacific GIS & Remote Sensing Conference. Over two half-days of Collaborative Thematic Workshops, we aim to unite the Pacific geospatial community around four core values: Community, Sharing, Collaboration, and Sustainable Development.

OGS VALUES

  • COMMUNITY: Build and strengthen a tight regional network for the common good. Connect complementary initiatives to maintain lasting unity.

  • SHARING: Promote transferable lessons and knowledge transfer. Open and share geospatial data and tools tailored to the Pacific.

  • COLLABORATION: Ensure inclusiveness from shared needs to delivery. Pool resources and tighten links across Oceanian territories.

  • SUSTANAIBLE DEVELOPMENT: Integrate environmental and social dimensions. Manage territories and natural resources responsibly while supporting mutual economic development.

These values guide all aspects of the symposium.

A genuine regional initiative

OGS: complementary events for our Pacific Islands

The Oceania Geospatial Symposium initiative comes from a genuine desire to support existing events, particularly the annual PGRSC conference, by adding an important element of concrete action for the future. On the one hand, at the technical level, this means to define collectively meaningful projects that respond to the concrete needs of our Pacific islands. On the other hand, it is important to ensure the link with our operational decision-makers, so as to work with them to endorse a vision co-constructed with and for our regional ecosystem.

While OGS 2022 was a resounding success, this year we have the opportunity to collaborate more closely with the PGRSC by coordinating our events, which complement each other perfectly. We would therefore like to express our sincere thanks to the PGRSC for facilitating these collaborations, which are fully in line with the common good of our growing geospatial community in Oceania.

This OGS 2025 sessions will be the occasion to lead Collaborative Thematic Workshops through open and inclusive sessions, in order to co-develop concrete projects and define the next collective steps around shared priority themes.

This year, following collective discussions led during OGS 2022, the 2 prioritized themes are Land Cover and Water Resources. We will also take time to talk about national geospatial collaborative frameworks, and we could even discuss further about geospatial skills development & training. All of these topics appear as key for our Pacific Islands, with a need to be adressed more concretely.

Provisional agenda

Our region faces critical issues of climate events and increasing rates of disasters. So events like this enable us to come together with friends, other experts, to learn stuff and hopefully come up with the answers to these challenges.
